After the controversial bestseller about Jesus of Nazareth, The Zealot, Reza Aslan returns with a human biography of God, in a style that combines the history of religion, his own controversial beliefs and the history of the evolution of his own faith.
The image that, as children, we associate with God, at least within Christian communities, is that of an entity similar in every way to Man. Feuerbach says that only a being that encompasses within itself all human needs can fully satisfy a human being. It was this dimension of God that attracted Aslan, still very young, to Christianity.
The idea of a “humanized God” (a human being with superhuman powers, or a divine version of ourselves) is something that has long been thought of as a form of human existence—and has shaped our early theories about nature, the universe, and our role in them.
“What is God? That question has been is the center of the human quest to make sense of the divine from the very beginning.”
Author Reza Aslan gives a short history of how early humans may have began their belief in animism, the view that animals, plants, rivers, mountains and natural phenomenon possess a soul or a spiritual essence. He speaks about the cave art that has been discovered throughout western Europe that may confirm this theory. One thing that needs to be stated clearly: this is not a religious novel. This is a book that takes a look at God through the context of history.
A book that radically defends the divine way of thinking.
