The Lies Your Brain Tells You (And Why You Should Be Grateful)

You’d think pain would be the one feeling you couldn’t argue with.

A friend might need to coax you into admitting you resent your coworker. A therapist might spend months helping you trace your anxiety back to its roots. But a pounding headache? That should be self-evident. Pain is biology’s alarm system — blunt, loud, impossible to ignore.

And yet your brain is lying to you about it too.

The Pain That Isn’t There — And the Pain That Shouldn’t Go Away

Consider angina pectoris: severe chest pain caused by inadequate blood supply to the heart. Walk to answer the door and nerves fire distress signals up your spinal cord, telling your brain that something is dangerously wrong. This is not a subtle feeling. It is your body screaming at you.

And yet, in clinical studies, sham surgeries — where patients were cut open, shuffled around, and sewn back up without any actual procedure — relieved angina as effectively as the real operation. Patients who received nothing but theater reported genuine, lasting reduction in pain.

This is the placebo effect at its most unsettling. We tend to picture it as a sugar pill soothing a mild headache. But it can quiet pain that cardiologists cannot. Which raises an uncomfortable question: if the surgery didn’t fix the heart and the pain went away anyway, what exactly was the pain measuring?

Your Brain Constructs What You Feel

Here’s what neuroscience now understands: pain is not simply a signal that travels from injury site to brain like a telegram. It is a construction. Your brain receives raw nerve impulses and then builds a subjective experience from them — drawing on physiological data, yes, but also on expectation, belief, context, and memory.

The same nerve impulses can produce different levels of pain depending on what your brain decides to make of them.

This is the neo-Jamesian view of emotion more broadly. Emotions are not readouts. They are reconstructions — assembled, in real time, from a mix of bodily state and contextual information your unconscious mind is quietly processing. Your brain doesn’t just receive feelings. It produces them, the way a director assembles footage into a narrative.

Which means the narrative can be edited.

The Physical Shapes the Mental (And Vice Versa)

We’ve long accepted that mental stress produces physical symptoms — tight shoulders, elevated pulse, a grinding headache. But the feedback runs in both directions, and we rarely talk about the return loop.

Say you have a tense argument with a colleague. The conflict ends, but your body stays activated — shoulders knotted, jaw tight, heart rate up. Now you walk into a meeting with someone who had nothing to do with the argument. Your unconscious brain, still swimming in stress physiology, uses that physical data as evidence. Evidence of what? Of how you feel about this new person.

The arousal from a conflict you’ve already left can color your read of a person you’re meeting for the first time.

This cuts both ways. Walking up a few flights of stairs before pitching a business idea might cause you to read the room as more energized and enthusiastic than it is. Your physical state doesn’t just accompany your feelings — it shapes them, often before you realize a feeling is forming at all.

We Are All Confabulating, All the Time

Oliver Sacks wrote about a patient named Thompson who suffered from Korsakoff’s syndrome — a form of amnesia that destroys the ability to form new memories. When Sacks walked in to examine him, Thompson never recognized him. But Thompson never knew he didn’t recognize him. Instead, he would latch onto some available cue — Sacks’s white coat, his manner — and generate a confident explanation. Today he was the butcher from down the street. A minute later, that story forgotten, he’d conjured a different one.

Thompson was doing what Sacks called “throwing bridges of meaning over abysses of meaninglessness.” He had gaps, and he filled them with plausible fictions he believed completely.

The clinical term is confabulation. And it is not unique to amnesiacs.

Research on healthy, functioning adults consistently shows that when we explain our own feelings, preferences, and choices, we are often confabulating. We believe we know why we chose that car, why we find that person attractive, why that joke landed. But the actual reasons are largely unconscious and inaccessible to us. We retrieve what we can access, construct a plausible story, and experience it as insight.

The fabrications are not random. They are systematic, drawing on shared social and cultural frameworks. We don’t invent just anything to explain ourselves. We invent the thing that sounds most reasonable given who we believe we are.

Why the Brain Cheats: Motivated Reasoning

At races, it makes sense to bet on the horse you believe is fastest. It does not make sense to believe a horse is fastest because you bet on it. And yet the second pattern is far more common in human decision-making than the first.

Psychologists call this motivated reasoning: our tendency to work backward from desired conclusions to supporting evidence, rather than forward from evidence to conclusions. It is why physicians who sincerely believe they are unaffected by industry gifts still show measurable bias in treatment decisions after accepting them. It is why researchers with financial ties to pharmaceutical companies reliably find results favorable to the sponsors. It is why roughly half of Britons believe in heaven and only a quarter believe in hell.

The mechanism is elegant in its subtlety. Motivated reasoning won’t function if it distorts reality too obviously — our conscious minds would catch it and the self-delusion would collapse. So it distorts just enough. It maintains what researchers call the “illusion of objectivity.” We construct credible arguments for the positions we already hold. We feel like we’re reasoning. We are, in a sense — just in reverse.

The Upside of Being Deceived by Yourself

Here is the uncomfortable conclusion that the research points toward: moderate self-deception is associated with better outcomes than accurate self-perception.

People with the most clear-eyed, accurate view of their own abilities, circumstances, and prospects tend to be moderately depressed or low in self-esteem. People with a slightly inflated self-image — people who believe they are a little smarter, a little more capable, a little more resilient than the evidence strictly warrants — tend to be happier, more cooperative, more persistent, and more likely to achieve the very things they overestimated themselves capable of.

The brain was not designed to understand itself. It was designed to help us survive. Sometimes those goals align. Often they don’t. But the gap between them — between what we tell ourselves and what is actually true — is not a defect. It is, in many cases, the engine.

What to Do With This

None of this is license to stop questioning yourself. The conscious mind can interrogate the unconscious one. We can learn to recognize when a feeling has a bodily or contextual source that has nothing to do with its apparent object. We can catch ourselves confabulating. We can notice motivated reasoning mid-stream.

But we should also hold that effort lightly. The brain’s tendency to construct, to color, to confabulate — these are not glitches. They are features that have kept the species functional for a long time.

The next time you feel certain about what you’re feeling, it’s worth asking: certain based on what? Your nervous system’s raw data, or the story your brain has already decided to tell?

The honest answer is almost always: both. And you’ll probably never know the exact ratio.
