We live in an age of relentless information. Notifications, decisions, conversations, deadlines — an endless stream of stimuli demanding our attention from the moment we wake up to the moment we collapse into bed. But have you ever stopped to wonder what is actually happening inside your brain as it tries to keep up?
It starts with how memory works.
The Three Layers of Memory
Your brain stores information across three distinct systems, each operating on a different timescale.
Sensory memory is the first stop. Every time you see, hear, smell, or touch something, that stimulus is briefly held in a sensory store — for mere milliseconds to a few seconds — before it either fades or gets passed along. It is your brain’s first filter, deciding what even deserves a second glance.
Working memory is where things get interesting. This is the system that holds information just long enough to use it — while you think, calculate, communicate, and make decisions. It is probably the most overworked part of your entire cognitive system. And crucially, it is finite. Think of it like the inbox in your email: it can only hold so much before it needs to be cleared out.
Long-term memory is the final destination — the archive where information is stored anywhere from an hour to an entire lifetime.
The working memory sits in the middle, acting as a go-between for everything you process in the moment and everything you eventually retain. And it has only a few ways to clear itself out and recover:
- When you stop and take a break
- When you daydream or drift into a trance-like state
- When you sleep
Have We Hit an Evolutionary Wall?
Anthropological research suggests that working memory has evolved over millennia, shaping the development of human beings from pre-modern Homo Sapiens all the way to modern man and the age of computing. That is a remarkable arc of progress.
But here is the uncomfortable question: have we hit a wall?
Our brains are sophisticated, yet they may be struggling to keep pace with the sheer volume of information that modern technology throws at us. The working memory that once helped our ancestors navigate a hunter-gatherer world is now being asked to process a 24-hour digital torrent. The hardware has not changed; the demands have exploded.
What Sleep Actually Does for You
Sleep is not simply the absence of wakefulness. It is an active, structured process — and understanding it changes how you think about rest entirely.
The Processing Phase: REM Sleep
During REM sleep, the brain gets to work on something vital: clearing the backlog. This is when information processed by the working memory during the day gets sorted, filed, and transferred. But REM sleep serves another function too — what might be called emotional dreaming.
These are the vivid, sometimes bizarre, sometimes deeply symbolic dreams that feel unlike anything else. Their purpose is powerful: rebalancing emotions, sorting through traumatic memories, and — perhaps most remarkably — solving problems.
History is full of examples. Einstein reportedly dreamt that he was riding on a beam of light, a vision that seeded his Theory of Relativity. The German chemist Kekulé, struggling to determine the structure of benzene, fell asleep on a bus and entered a hypnagogic dream state where he saw a chain of whirling atoms curling back on itself — leading him to deduce that benzene is a ring structure, not a straight chain as he had assumed.
Creative people — artists, musicians, writers — often report the most intense versions of these dreams. The inner world is loud and alive during REM sleep, which is both a gift and, for some, a burden.
The Restorative Phase: Deep Sleep
Then there is deep sleep — phases 3 and 4 — and this is the sleep most people are actually craving when they say they are exhausted.
During deep sleep, stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol begin to drop. The brain shifts into repair mode, producing the hormones that rebuild and restore the body. This is the sleep that keeps the immune system strong, the skin healthy, digestion functioning, and sex drive intact.
In Eastern philosophy, this state is referred to as yogic or sattvic sleep — from the Sanskrit word for “pure” — a renewal of the body on every level: physical, emotional, and spiritual.
The Problem: More Sleep, Less Rest
Here is the paradox of modern life. We are likely getting more hours of sleep than at any point in human history. And yet many people wake up feeling unrested, foggy, and depleted.
The reason may be this: the relentless demand for information processing is consuming more and more of our REM sleep, which in turn crowds out the deep sleep that genuinely restores us. We are sleeping longer but recovering less.
The brain is not lazy — it is simply overwhelmed. And the inbox, as it were, never fully empties.
You Wake Up More Than You Think
Here is something that surprises almost everyone: on average, a human being wakes up 10 to 15 times a night.
Most people have no memory of this, and that is perfectly normal. What is actually happening is something called sleep elasticity — a rhythmic rebounding between sleep and wakefulness throughout the night. Rather than fully waking, you drift into a semi-conscious, trance-like state called hypnagogia. In this state, your brain briefly assesses safety and then slides effortlessly back into the next sleep cycle.
One theory traces this back to our evolutionary past, when maintaining a degree of vigilance while sleeping may have been the difference between life and being eaten by a predator.
Not Everyone Needs the Same Amount of Sleep
Sleep needs are not one-size-fits-all, and the science backs this up.
Einstein reportedly needed 10 to 11 hours of sleep — particularly when working on something important. Margaret Thatcher, by contrast, was said to function on just five hours a night.
Psychologist Ernest Hartmann studied the personality differences between long and short sleepers and found something striking. Long sleepers tended to be more creative, introverted, emotional, and complex in personality. Short sleepers were more content and socially adept.
More revealing still: long sleepers experience roughly twice as much REM sleep as short sleepers — a strong indication that REM dreaming plays a central role in memory processing, creativity, and navigating our inner lives.
Gender may also play a role. Some studies suggest women need up to an hour more sleep per night than men, and falling short of this may contribute to higher rates of depression in women. The week before menstruation, many women find their need for sleep increases as demand for REM sleep rises during that phase of the cycle.
What This Means for You
The evidence points in one direction: we need to take sleep more seriously — not just the hours, but the quality.
Sleep alone, however, is not the full picture. Energy renewal also depends on nutrition, hydration, movement, relationships, and even spiritual health. Taking care of these reduces the pressure we place on sleep to do all the heavy lifting.
Start by paying attention to what your body is actually telling you. Some nights you will need more. Some nights, less. The key is learning to listen — and to protect the conditions that allow your brain to do what it was always designed to do: process, restore, and begin again.
The working memory may only be the size of an inbox, but with the right rest, it is capable of extraordinary things.
