Before the internet, a newspaper editor decided what you worried about. They made calculated judgements about what was newsworthy, what their readers needed to know, and what deserved the narrow spotlight of public attention. That editor still exists. But today, they share the desk with an algorithm — and the algorithm has no interest in what is important. It is only interested in what you click.
Understanding how that shift happened, and what it has done to us, is one of the more urgent tasks of our time.
The Optimization Machine
Facebook pioneered a method of split testing that became one of the most powerful tools in digital media. The process was straightforward: write at least twenty-five different headlines for the same piece of content. Vary the title, the subtitle, the photo, the inline text. Show different versions to different audiences. Measure clicks. The version that generated the most engagement won, and its copy was applied across all posted articles.
The goal, as it emerged through this process, was specific: make people upset while keeping them entertained. Upset enough to stop scrolling. Entertained enough to share.
At the time, Facebook had just surpassed one billion users and drove the majority of all news traffic worldwide. Twitter was tiny by comparison. Reddit required effort. Tumblr demanded finesse. But Facebook was easy. It owned the exponential referral cycle — users sharing with friends, who shared with their friends, compounding outward. It was a viral colossus, and it had just handed publishers a precise instrument for hijacking human attention at scale.
What emerged from that optimization process was not random. Strange, dark patterns began to appear. The content that won, consistently, was content that provoked. Outrage brought the eyeballs. Anxiety kept them.
Politics Learned the Same Lesson
Mainstream media had historically acted as a kind of gatekeeper for political attention. Getting covered was an enormous advantage for any candidate — and getting covered required, at minimum, some degree of conventional behaviour.
Social media dissolved that constraint. On platforms where outrage spread faster and further than anything else, doing something outrageous became a legitimate political strategy. Sensationalized coverage drove massive traffic and revenue spikes for Facebook, Twitter, and CNN alike. The incentives of the attention economy and the incentives of political disruption had perfectly aligned.
A candidate whose ideology played on anxiety about external threats — whose statements were deliberately provocative, whose persona generated continuous controversy — was not a problem for these platforms. They were its ideal content.
Fracking the Mind
The discovery of techniques for extracting attention through emotional provocation can be compared to the discovery of hydraulic fracturing as a method for extracting oil. Both produced a sudden, massive boom. Both, without any environmental safeguards, generated toxic byproducts.
In the case of fracking, the byproduct flows into water tables. In the case of attention extraction, it flows into our collective conversation — polluting common discourse, distorting our perception of the world, and making the sensational feel like the normal.
Our media environment informs our sense of threat. This is not a minor effect. A sustained focus on crime in news coverage does not just shift our opinions about crime policy — it makes us feel genuinely more threatened than the facts warrant. For most of us, perception is reality. When we experience the world as dangerous, we behave accordingly, regardless of what the actual data shows.
The Terrorism Illusion
In the mid-2010s, it was easy to believe that terrorism was one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Coverage was wall-to-wall. The emotional weight of each attack was enormous. A two-year sample of front-page stories from the New York Times showed a profound asymmetry: terrorist attacks received coverage wildly disproportionate to their actual death toll relative to other causes of homicide.
The reality was that terrorism-related deaths were a tiny fraction of overall homicides, particularly in the United States. But the coverage did not reflect the statistics. It reflected what generated attention.
Terrorism is emotionally unlike other forms of violence. It seems to strike at the foundations of civil society itself. There are legitimate reasons to cover it, discuss it, and take it seriously. But here is the uncomfortable truth: by covering it with such intensity, we built the most efficient distribution system imaginable for terrorism’s actual purpose — terror.
ISIS understood this better than almost anyone.
In 2014, as ISIS rose rapidly to prominence, it functioned less like a conventional military force and more like a media operation that also had an army. It built a well-funded media wing, prioritized its brand as much as its battlefield efforts, and manufactured a narrative of dominance, momentum, and inevitability. Its actual resources were limited. Its international support was essentially nonexistent. Its standing army was small.
But its media strategy was sophisticated. By committing acts specifically designed to generate maximum coverage — beheadings filmed for global distribution, carefully staged atrocities — ISIS exploited the hyperbolic attention economy to recruit fighters from around the world and inspire attacks by individuals with no formal connection to the organization. It did not need a large army. It needed a large audience.
We provided one.
Why Our Brains Were Built for This Trap
None of this is entirely the media’s fault. Or the algorithm’s. The deeper problem is that we were built for a world that no longer exists.
For our paleolithic ancestors, lived in small tribes, personal stories were the primary data source for understanding reality. Hear several accounts of wild dog attacks, and you reasonably conclude that wild dogs are dangerous. Your sample size is your community — a handful of people whose experiences directly reflect your likely experiences.
This is the root of what psychologists call availability bias: the mental shortcut by which we judge the probability of something by how easily an example comes to mind. If it comes to mind readily, our brains assume it must be common. This shortcut evolved because it worked. When the information available to you was limited to what you could directly observe and what your immediate community reported, readily available information really was a reliable indicator of probability.
We no longer live in those small pockets of connection. We are now exposed to a vast, global network of news and information — but our brains are still running the same ancient software. We cannot intuitively grasp the difference between sixty thousand deaths and six hundred thousand deaths from the same cause. Both register as “a lot.” The abstract statistic does not move us. The vivid individual story does.
Journalists and politicians have understood this for decades. Two types of emotional content override rational evaluation more reliably than almost anything else: fear and anger.
The old media adage was “if it bleeds, it leads.” In the modern digital environment, a new rule has emerged alongside it: enrage to engage.
The Cost of Constant Outrage
What does it do to a society when its primary information environment is optimised not for accuracy, not for importance, not for civic value — but for maximum emotional provocation?
It distorts our priorities. We struggle to allocate attention and resources proportionally when our sense of threat is systematically miscalibrated. We become worse at distinguishing between genuine emergencies and manufactured ones. We grow more afraid, more angry, and more certain — while growing less accurate.
The algorithm does not intend any of this. It has no intentions. It simply rewards what gets clicked, and we click what upsets us. The damage is real, but it has no author.
That, perhaps, is the most unsettling part.
